Sample Lesson: The Bamboo Tree

LESSON 1

We've all heard the cliche - "Trust the Process". So much so that it's almost become a joke. But as you will learn in this module, there is great personal value to viewing success not by the results, but by the commitment to your development process.

First, let's make one thing clear: baseball is an imperfect game. You get out 70% of the time, meaning it's meant to test your resolve and ability to handle adversity. Yet, too many of us put so much pressure on the outcomes that it distracts us from what really matters: getting better and learning every day.

Think about your career as the Bamboo Tree in this story. Think about the years of hard work you have been putting in up to this moment - the hours of effort & sacrifice. It’s easy to start out slow during a season and think about how everything you did was a waste. “I’m not seeing immediate results, that must mean I failed in my preparation.” But like all great ventures, it takes time and patience to see the fruits of our labors. Your success won't happen overnight, it might not even happen this year, & if your sole motivation is the result, you will constantly be disappointed - in baseball & in life.

So what's the big takeaway from this story? "Success" is not determined by the results. "Success" is determined by your commitment to your routine & training. Who are you the next day after an 0-4 game vs. a 4-4 game? Do you wake up ready to get back to work? Or do you sit on the couch because you're unhappy/happy with your results?
