Focus on Your Next Step
Dec 07, 2023LESSON:
Each one of us is constantly tempted by self-doubt:
- “Will I start this year?”
- “Will I get that College offer?”
- “Am I doing enough to make the team?”
I wish we could snap our fingers and make your dreams a reality, but life isn't that simple. The truth is, you may not see the path clearly yet, but I promise you, the work you are putting in each and every day is getting you closer. Some days might be leaps, other days crawls, but you must have the perspective that inevitably, “I will get there.”
APPLICATION:
Make sure you approach your training with intention over the next few weeks. Meaning, don’t just go through the motions. For each rep, make sure you are working on an idea, a feel, or a movement pattern that will improve your swing or throwing motion.
“What is my focus on this rep?”
For example, I had an issue throughout my career of being lazy with my back leg when I pitched. Therefore, my drills in the off-season would be set up to correct this. I would isolate my back leg and focus my thoughts on being more explosive in this area. The same is true for each part of your development. Do your best to isolate your weaknesses and be intentional with your reps to fix them. 5 Reps with great intention + focus are better than 25 without.
The more you narrow your focus to the small details, the faster you will overcome big obstacles. Small, intentional steps each day will get you to your goals more quickly than large but infrequent leaps.
